beach days

I'm feeling nostalgic this morning. I have been scanning some film images, and this particular one is of my niece, who is in high school now! Taken in Martha's Vineyard. I thought I would share this, as it is one of my favorites. Happy Monday all! xoxo-kate.

Lets backtrack a bit, shall we? I finally had the roll of film developed that I shot all the way back from Thanksgiving. I wanted to pick up my original film camera. I shot the last roll of Kodak b&w film I had-they don't make it any longer, so I kind of held on to to it forever mostly for nostalgia. Most of these were taken in Ipswich, Massachusetts, on little neck, where we spent Thanksgiving. I just sort of wandered off by myself one morning and drove to the furthest point I could towards the water, and I couldn't go any further (later finding out it is called Little Neck). It was cool and somewhat windy, but I jumped out and took those few shots.  They are so grainy and moody, I think. The film was probably ten years old, so who knows about the quality, but it was mostly for nostalgia's sake. So mission completed.

I came across some black and white images I took with my old Nikon  N 70 from waaaay back. I had scanned them to use for print ads and found the old IND files. I love the graininess that film produces and I think there is a real quality to the old film prints that I miss with digital. I wonder if anyone aside from a photographer notices that quality?

candid camera: the reception

Many people think wedding photos and what pops into mind are the classically framed photos with the light just right, and the bride striking a pose with a handsome groom by her side. This is all wonderful. But it recently became apparent to me (by a request to see more candid reception photos) that some of my favorite shots  are when they didn't know I was shooting. The father/daughter  son/mother dance, the expression on the face of the couple when their best friend is making a toast, or finally the moments of pure joy during the reception when everyone  kicks off their shoes (literally) and dances. These are the moments I wanted to share. It is always hard to pick and choose what to put on my web site.  I have my own personal favorites, and then I  narrow it down to others tastes as well. I try to switch up my site at least seasonally. Check back and make sure you view some blogs as well. I hope this gives you a glimpse at the joy and (sometimes) tears that take place during the reception, when finally everyone is at ease.

How do you know when you get it right? You just do. Most of the time. Even before digital arrived, (when you can check and see if you got the shot). It is instinctual, it is part of being in the moment. Having taken pictures of brides now for almost fifteen years, I have to say that they don't just blend into on another (as one may think). Each, with their own personality, each that have left an impression on me. I have connected on a personal level with every one. I feel especially nostalgic about black and white. I spent years in the darkroom carefully unloading film in the dark room, watching it develop, handling each piece of paper gingerly with the tongs as I set it in the developer. Watching it emerge. I shot only in black and white film up until about five years ago. I only used color when asked by a bride. I guess with progress comes change. But I must say I miss the smell of stop bath. Thank you to all my unique and beautiful brides, for sharing their most important and memorable day with me. I feel honored.

conto clan

I had a blast re-shooting the Conto clan, with a third on the way, the boys are embracing the thought of a new baby brother or sister, and with a lot of humor--the boys embraced moms belly, and the thought of a new baby in the house. Thanks, for allowing me to shoot these intimate moments, and thanks to the boys for entertaining me with their humor.
